Q: How do I access the
catalogue and what is contained in the catalogue?
A: The
library
catalogue is shared with the University of Melbourne. Whilst
searching the catalogue you may limit your view to 'MBS
Library' (for both Carlton and Mt. Eliza campuses), or 'MBS
Carlton' or 'MBS Mt Eliza' only.
The
MBS library items included in the catalogue are books,
journals and CD-ROMS. Items held in the MBS video collection
are not included in the catalogue; they are instead listed
here.
Q: How can I renew my loans remotely?
A: This may be
done via the link called
log in to

Q: How do I place a hold on a
book?
Please see our instructions
here. You may only place a hold on a book which is
currently on loan. Holds cannot be placed on books which are
currently available.
Q: Where can I return a book?
A: Library books may be
returned through the chute at the loans desk in the McLennan
Library during opening hours or through the chute opposite
the library entrance when the library is closed. Please
return all MBS books at MBS.
Likewise, if you have
borrowed books from the University of Melbourne Library,
please return them at the University of Melbourne, not at
MBS.
If you are located out of

Q: There's a book you don't have which I think you ought to have. Will you buy it?
A: Talk to us. We can check if the book may be arriving in the library soon from a supplier. Alternatively, fill out our
Recommend a
purchase form and we'll be in contact with you.
Q: Can I borrow a book for a friend on my card?
A: No, you can't. Library cards and student cards are identification cards and should not be misused or shared. You are liable for all library collection items borrowed using your card and all actions taken whilst accessing online resources using your card. Use of the library is dependent upon adherence to the
Library
rules. The library aims to maintain the integrity of patrons' privacy and identity with regard to library usage.
Q: What sort of fines will I incur if I return books late?
A: Periodically, patrons with outstanding overdue loans will be sent an invoice. The invoice will be for the cost of replacing the overdue book/s plus a $15 processing fee per book. When the books are subsequently returned, the invoice will be reduced to a $15 processing fee per overdue book.
During exam periods and the week preceding exam periods steeper penalties apply, but only for the late return of Recommended
reading (3-day) and Reserve (1 hour or overnight) collection books. This fine is $50 per day.
Q: Do you offer flexible loan periods?
A: Yes we do, during term breaks. If you're going to be out of Melbourne during non-term time
and will be unable to return books by their normal due date, ask us about obtaining a longer loan period for non-course-related books.
Q: For how
long may I borrow books?
A: Please see
Lending policy and fines.
Q:
Which resources can I not borrow?
A: Resources which
cannot be borrowed are reference collection books,
newspapers, videos and DVDs. For more information see

collection. The recreation collection contains both
travel
and
general interest books.
These books are also catalogued in in the library
catalogue.
Q:
Where can I find the back issues of journals and newspapers?
A: The latest year

in the library basement.
The latest year of
hardcopy newspapers are also kept in the library basement.
Please ask library
staff if you need anything to be retrieved from the

Q:
I've found a book in the catalogue with the prefix 'MBS f".
What does this mean?
A: The 'f' stands

located just beyond the new books display in the library.
