View and renew loans or place holds

Viewing your patron record

Viewing your patron record is an option located at the first screen of the library’s catalogue. It allows you to check what you have out on loan or on hold, and when those loans are due back. You will also be alerted to any overdue charges or other fines and penalties outstanding on your record.

Renewing your loans

You may renew your loans unless another patron has placed a hold on the item you wish to renew. There may also be other instances in which a renewal will not be permitted. These will generally be due to the fact that you have an overdue item; you have reached the maximum number of renewals permissible; or the lending library has placed a bar on the renewal option.

To view and renew loans:

  • select log in to your patron record
  • enter your full name and the barcode number on your student ID card or your MBS Library approved borrower's card
  • your patron record will be displayed, including the number of items currently checked out
  • click on items currently checked out to display the list of items
  • check the box next to each item(s) you wish to renew and click renew selected items, or click on renew all
  • take note of the next due date
  • click on log out to exit out of your patron record otherwise your loan details, including your address, will remain on the screen.

Placing a hold on an item  that is on loan

Placing a hold ensures that an item that is currently on loan to another patron will be put aside for you on its return. You cannot place a hold on an item which is currently available.

To place a hold:

Firstly, search for the item in the catalogue and display its full record on the screen.

  • click on request at the top of the screen
  • enter your name and the barcode number on your student ID card or your MBS Library approved borrower's card
  • please note: the choose a pick-up location feature is not available to MBS staff and students for the transferring of books between branch libraries. Therefore, please select the owning library as the pick-up location and collect the book from that location
  • specify the last date the book is needed (optional)
  • click on submit
  • if a local (MBS) copy is available the request will be denied, otherwise a list of all copies of the item, with location and current status, will be displayed
  • select the copy you want to place on hold and click on request selected item
  • your request will be recorded in the library system.

If you require items to be transferred between the McLennan Library and IRC, please contact MBS Library staff.

How will you know when your hold is ready?

An email notice indicating that your hold is awaiting collection will be sent to your university email address (which can be redirected to your MBS or any other preferred address) as soon as the item has been returned.

Items will be held for a maximum of 3 days from the date of return. After that period, any uncollected items will be removed from the hold shelf or passed on to the next person in the hold queue.
